TYPOGRAPHY
  • The font in the opening sequence of Insidious is initially, fairly basic, capitalised lettering. However, the very first transition is integrated with a transition into a child's lamp, as though revealing what, at first, was an unknown object.
  • The main title of 'INSIDIOUS' is shown in red, elongated lettering, provoking connotations with the devil. This also has the effect of 'looming' over the audience in an intimidating way. The title also appears to be flickering, emphasised by the red colouring on the dark background, similar to when someone holds a light under their face as though telling a story in the dark.
  • The typography that follows is consistent throughout the rest of the sequence. It consists of red lettering that fades after 3-5 seconds. The red colouring is very reminiscent of blood, especially when fading as it replicates the image of the disappearing into thin air, a fitting theme for a paranormal film.
  • The font of the actors is larger than the job it shows them to have done. For example, 'CO-PRODUCED BY' sits above 'JOHN R.LEONETTI' in smaller lettering. This gives the names prevalence, likewise with the main title, emphasised by the bold lettering against the dark background.

Relationship of Text and Visuals

  • I have learnt from this sequence that the titles are not just present for one purpose (for credit) but also used as a device to build tension and set the mood for the film to follow. Also, by linking the typography with the theme of film, a sense of awareness is gained by the audience.
  • I have also learnt that by separating the typography of the main title from that of the actors and producers etc. the main title gains prevalence.
  • Also, by integrating the typography with the background as shown through the initial title with the glowing lamp, prevalence for the title was easily created.
How Can We Use These Effects?

  • It would be effective to take advantage of the technique used in the very first title for example, where the meaningless orange light transitions into the child's lamp. This creates a very punctual title that stands out. It would be challenging to replicate such an effect however we will be able to use certain objects in our filming location to base our titles around. We will also have to consider the colour of the font. In Insidious, the colours were very prominent against the backgrounds, again allowing them to stand out. So we will have to consider the font colour before determining the surfaces that will display the titles.
  • The fonts used to replicate the effect of blood would also prove effective In our title sequence due to the violent connotations.
