- Paranormal/supernatural horror, is one of the many sub categories of horror film production. What sets it aside from other horrors (such as slasher horror) is the strong focus on death, afterlife and the evil associated with these.
- Many paranormal horrors involve ghosts, demons or the devil, offering the potential for ritualistic themes and religious aspects that show relevance to the films paranormal nature. Character distress through haunting and hunting is the main plot devices that paranormal films have focus on, as well as character either becoming or being attacked by hellish creatures.
- It was in the 20th century that paranormal films became associated with psychological horror, as most of the time there is nothing physically in existence causing harm to characters. An example of a film that combines these two sub-genres is 'The Turn of The Screw,' by Henry James.
- Furthermore, the basis of many paranormal/supernatural horror films is the location in which they take place. For example, we often associate the paranormal with age, therefore an old, Victorian house provides an ideal, eerie dwelling for the horror film due to the sense of anonymity and unknowingness that it possesses.

Paranormal Mood Board

The Conjuring-Wardrobe Scene
We tend to visually link certain aspects and characteristics to paranormal. For example, like in the bottom left picture you can see their eyes are hollow yet they are smiling. By merging these the mood created is eerie and supernatural. Another example of visual association with the paranormal is a pale/white appearance that signifies ghostly connotations.
George, the same as Harry - this is a good start, but needs to be more detailed for L4. What are the visual conventions for this genre? Your moodboard needs to be more detailed.
ReplyDeleteI really like the moodboard you have made for this piece of research George, maybe we should start to research into this sub genre more deeply as its popularity may make it appropriate for the sequence we will make
